Abstract

To find out the influence of chronic smoking on aerobic trainablity, 17 female smokers and 17 non-smokers trained at the individual anaerobic threshold under supervision 3 times per week for 30 minutes. Both groups matched in anthropometrical and spiroergometric parameters like running performance, anaerobic threshold and following parameters: heart rate, ventilation, aerobic and anaerobic capacity. Difference were registered in CO-hemoglobin and thiocyanate. Both groups increased running speed, ventilation and oxygen uptake. Smokers showed a rise in maximum breathing frequency, non-smokers in anaerobic capacity. Both groups lowered their CO-hemoglobin, while thiocyanate remained constant. in female smokers negative effects on performance parameters could not be seen after 6 weeks of endurance training. Lowering CO-hemoglobin has preventive effects.
